Zvecan


The municipality of Zvecan is located in the north of Kosovo and Metohija, in the Kosovo valley of the river Ibar which is closed off from the south east by the volcano Zvecan, Mali Zvecan, Sokolica and Majdan mountain. The municipality is also surrounded by the parts of the mountain ranges of Kopaonik, Mokra Gora and Rogozna.
The total area of the municipality numbers 122.4 km2.

The area of Zvecan municipality is very rich with water. Through the entire area flows the river Ibar which is the main water supply. Thermo mineral springs (the temperature of the water ranges from 46 to 56o C) are located in the Banjska settlement, only 15 km from Zvecan.



History


Even though it has very little written clues from the past, the town of Zvecan is especially significant to our nation’s history.

The seat of the former Zvecanska zupa is the ancient fortress of Zvecan. The settlement Zvecan had a character of town known throughout the Balkans as early as the 12th century. In the urban sense, the settlement of Zvecan was built during the period from 1948 untill today. Based on the census from 1948, the settlement had 726 people, and more than 2000 from 1970.

Until the making of the municipality of Zvecan in 1990, the town was part of the municipality of Kosovska Mitrovica. The distance between the two settlements is 2.5km. As of the moment of the formation of the municipality, in the functional sense, comes the taking over of administrative, and all other functions, by Zvecan.
